Warnings Against Gender Stereotypes in Early Twentieth-Century American
Many early twentieth-century American writers used conflicts based on female stereotypes as a central theme in their works. For example, the titular character from Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's short story A New England Nun lives a life of domestic solitude, happily sewing and cleaning while separated from her husband to be for nearly fifteen years. Freeman's nun uses her domesticity as an excuse to avoid marrying her fiancà ©, though she leads him on for most of the story and only avoids marriage after learning of her betrothed's love for another woman. Similarly, the much mentioned but never revealed central character in Susan Glaspell's play Trifles seems to embrace domesticity to escape the misery brought on by her marriage, even managing to escape both the guilt and suspicion of her husband's murder through her and her fellow charactersââ¬â¢ embrace of her passive, domestic, and harmless feminine archetype. By focusing on the conflict arising from female stereotypes, these two stories reveal the dangers of stereotyping women as passive, subordinate, and domesticated, both to the adopter and the adoptee. Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's A New England Nun reveals the hazards of female stereotypes to their adoptees through the actions of Louisa Ellis. At the time of the story, Louisa has been engaged to marry her fiancà © Joe Dagget for fifteen years, fourteen of which he has spent away from Louisa (Freeman 1623). Though Louisa admits that "fifteen years ago she had been in love with him," she feels apprehensive about their inevitable marriage after his return (Freeman 1623). Louisa's apprehension towards Joe builds throughout the story, but because her embrace of the female stereotype prevents her from expressing her true feelings and breaking... ... escape their undesirable predicaments. The ease at which the problems in both stories could be solved by abandoning presumptions of how women should behave suggests that Susan Glaspell and Mary E. Wilkins Freeman want people to follow their own desires rather than the conventions of gender roles. Furthermore, this moral continues to be true today; modern readers can still benefit from relinquishing their assumptions about how others should behave based on their gender, religion, or ethnicity. Lives of the Saints Essay
In Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Hamlet and Nino Ricciââ¬â¢s Lives of the Saints both demonstrate different visions of women. Comparing weak and indecisive women in Hamlet as to strong and independent women in Lives of the Saints. Ophelia in Hamlet is characterized many times as a weak women especially in the quote, ââ¬Å"frailty thy name is woman.â⬠She is completely dependent on her father and proves her dependence when she acts cruel to Hamlet. Which goes against her true feelings toward Hamlet. Afterwords Ophelia agrees to not see Hamlet anymore, ââ¬Å" I shall obey my lord.â⬠Which shows Poloniousââ¬â¢s control over his daughter. Opheliaââ¬â¢s actions show that she will do anything to please her father, even making a personal sacrifice which she doesnââ¬â¢t agree with. Opheliaââ¬â¢s desire to please her father leads her to be used as a puppet in order for the King and Polonious to spy on Hamlet, Opheliaââ¬â¢s willingness to spy on a person she truly loves, shows her true nature toward her father. Even when Hamlet harasses Ophelia and tells her to go to a nunnery, Ophelia had the inability to defend herself. When her father passes on, Ophelia is left by herself, with no one to give her guidance. Instead of trying to move on with her life, she calls for her brother hoping he will have a plan for her, ââ¬Å"My brother shall know of it and so I thank you for your good counsel.â⬠Poloniousââ¬â¢s was irreplaceable and finally Ophelia realizes this ââ¬Å" I would give you some violets, but they withered all when my father died.â⬠The significance of the violets are that they symbolize faithfulness and they all died because she felt useless without her father. Opheliaââ¬â¢s death is in result of her dependence and weakness of character.Overall, Ophelia goes mad because she has no position in society. Men have continuously ordered her around, used her, pulling her mind in every direction. She put her faith in one person and never made her own decisions. Similar to Ophelia is Gertrude. She is also characterized by the quote, ââ¬Å"frailty thy name is woman.â⬠Gertrude depends on her husband. Gertrude longing for the attention that she loses when her husband dies, quickly marries Claudius, her husbands brother. Shakespeare displays that women have no back bone and our weak. As if they could not live with out others, men especially. Nino Ricci demonstrates a whole different side of women, he shows that women are strong and independent. The character that illustrates these qualities is Cristina, she raised her child Vittorio alone. Unlike the women in Hamlet, Cristina didnââ¬â¢t need a man to help her raise her child or to get through life. When her son gets beat up at school, she doesnââ¬â¢t just ignore it. She takes physical action about the situation â⬠Iââ¬â¢ll make her pay for this, Vittorio, youââ¬â¢ll see, by the blood of Christ Iââ¬â¢ll make her pay. The wiping at some tears in her own eyes, she took me suddenly by the hand and marched me out the door into the street. (107).â⬠Cristina is defiantly not a pushover and stands up for what she believes in. She lives in a village where the women stay at home and the men work out in the field and everyone believed in strange superstitions. Cristina was against her villageââ¬â¢s expectations and went against what everyone thought. Cristina is outspoken and self-assured. She has a feminist point of view and is vey confident in it, she says ââ¬Å" Heââ¬â¢s probably slept with every whore in America by now, but for me its a disgrace. (154)â⬠. Cristina is explaining about her husband Mario but it is also a statement in general about men. Guys can go around going from girl to girl to girl and its not a problem. But if a women were to do the same thing, even if it was just with one guy its an absolute disgrace. This book was based in 1960 and the same sentence could apply to 2012. Also has significance to the text because she had an affair and the whole town found out, which then they treated her with disgu st. Cristina also states ââ¬Å"Women have had their faces up their asses for too long, they let their men run around like goats and then theyââ¬â¢re happy if they donââ¬â¢t come home and beat them! (154)â⬠It is demeaning that women are seen as whores when they have affairs, especially when its said by other women. Theyââ¬â¢re oppressing their own gender when saying it. She finally decides to move away and says her final words to the village ââ¬Å" You are the ones who are dead, not me, because not one of you knows what it means to be free and to make a choice, and I pray to God that he wipes this town and all its stupidities off the face of the earth! (184)â⬠Most women wouldnââ¬â¢t have spoke there mind, especially a woman like Ophelia or Gertrude. Cristina constantly fought with her father and always disagreed ââ¬Å"Long arguments were carried on daily between kitchen and bedroom, tension hovering around.(154).â⬠She finally got fed up with living with her father and hearing his opinion she said ââ¬Å" Then to hell with all of you! Iââ¬â¢ll go to Rome, Naples, anywhere.â⬠She had the courage and strength to leave her father and start a life somewhere else, mean while Ophelia couldnââ¬â¢t last a couple days with out her father and killed her self. Nino Ricci illustrates women to be outspoken, independent and powerful. In the end of each story both women characters die. The difference is the way they lived their life. Cristina at least lived her life, standing up for what she believe in and having her own opinion. As for Ophelia lived a lie, as she was a spineless imbecile always doing what others told her to do and had a pathetic death. Shakespeare and Nino Ricci may have very different vision on women but at the same time they are both very accurate views.

Jimmy Carter (born James Earl Carter, Jr.; October 1, 1924) is an American politician who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. His perceived failure to deal with serious problems facing the nation at the time lead to Carterââ¬â¢s failure to be elected to a second term. However, for his international diplomacy and advocacy for human rights and social development, both during and after his presidency, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. The first U.S. president to be born in a hospital, he was the oldest son of Lillian Gordy, a registered nurse, and James Earl Carter Sr., a farmer, and businessman, who ran a general store. Lillian and James Earl eventually had three more children, Gloria, Ruth, and Billy. Jimmy Carter at one year old. Bettmann / Getty Images As a teenager, Carter earned money by growing peanuts on his familyââ¬â¢s farm and selling them in his fatherââ¬â¢s store. Though Earl Carter was a firm segregationist, he allowed Jimmy to befriend the children of local black farmworkers. In the early 1920s, Carterââ¬â¢s mother had defied racial barriers to advise black women on health care issues. In 1928, the family moved to Archery, Georgia, a small town just two miles from Plains, populated almost entirely by impoverished African American families. While most of the rural South was devastated by the Great Depression, the Carter familyââ¬â¢s farms prospered, eventually employing over 200 workers. In 1941, Jimmy Carter graduated from the all-white Plains High School. Despite being raised in this racially-segregated environment, Carter recalled that many of his closest childhood friends were African American. In the fall of 1941, he studied engineering at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia, transferred to the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1942, and was admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943. Excelling at academics, Carter graduated in the top ten percent of his class on June 5, 1946, and obtained his commission as a Navy ensign. While attending the Naval Academy, Carter fell in love with Rosalynn Smith, whom he had known since childhood. The couple married on July 7, 1946, and would go on to have four children: Amy Carter, Jack Carter, Donnel Carter, and James Earl Carter III. Naval Career From 1946 to 1948, Ensign Carterââ¬â¢s duty included tours aboard the battleships Wyoming and Mississippi in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. After completing officers training at the U.S. Navy Submarine School at New London, Connecticut, in 1948, he was assigned to the submarine Pomfret and was promoted to lieutenant, junior grade in 1949. In 1951, Carter qualified for command and served as Executive Officer aboard the submarine Barracuda. Jimmy Carter as Ensign, USN, circa World War II. Of his time with the brilliant but demanding Rickover, Carter recalled, ââ¬Å"I think, second to my own father, Rickover had more effect on my life than any other man.â⬠In December 1952, Carter led the U.S. Navy crew assisting with the shutdown and cleanup of the damaged experimental nuclear reactor at Atomic Energy of Canadas Chalk River Laboratories. As president, Carter would cite his experiences with the Chalk River meltdown for shaping his views on atomic energy and his decision to block U.S. development of a neutron bomb. After the death of his father in October 1953, Carter requested and was honorably discharged from the Navy and remained on reserve duty until 1961. After returning the family farm to profitability, Carterââ¬ânow a respected peanut farmerââ¬âbecame active in local politics, winning a seat on the county board of education in 1955 and eventually becoming its chairman. In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Courtââ¬â¢s Brown v. Board of Education ruling ordered the desegregation of all U.S. public schools. As civil rights protests demanding an end to all forms of racial discrimination spread across the nation, public opinion in the rural South remained strongly opposed the idea of racial equality. When the segregationist White Citizens Council organized a Plains chapter, Carter was only white man who refused to join. Carter was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1962. After running unsuccessfully in 1966, he was elected as Georgias 76th governor on January 12, 1971. By then a rising star in national politics, Carter was selected as the campaign chairman for the Democratic National Committee in the 1974 congressional and gubernatorial elections. Carter announced his candidacy for President of the United States on December 12, 1974, and won his partyââ¬â¢s nomination on the first ballot at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. In the presidential election on Tuesday, November 2, 1976, Carter defeated incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford, winning 297 electoral votes and 50.1% of the popular vote. Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as the 39th President of the United States on January 20, 1977. The Carter Presidency Carter took office during a period of economic recession and a deepening energy crisis. As one of his first acts, he fulfilled a campaign promise by issuing an executive order granting unconditional amnesty for all Vietnam War-era draft evaders. Carterââ¬â¢s domestic policy focused on ending the United Statesââ¬â¢ dependence on foreign oil. While he achieved an 8% decrease in foreign oil consumption, the Iranian Revolution of 1979 resulted in soaring oil prices and an unpopular nationwide gasoline shortage, overshadowing Carters achievements. Carter made human rights the centerpiece of his foreign policy. He cut off U.S. aid to Chile, El Salvador and Nicaragua in response to their governmentsââ¬â¢ human rights abuses. In 1978, he negotiated the Camp David Accords, a historic Middle East peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. In 1979, Carter signed the SALT II nuclear arms reduction treaty with the Soviet Union, at least temporarily easing Cold War tensions.à Despite his successes, Carterââ¬â¢s presidency was generally regarded as a failure. His inability to work with Congress limited his ability to implement what might have been his most effective policies. His controversial 1977 Torrijosââ¬âCarter Treaties returning the Panama Canal to Panama led many people to view him as a weak leader with little concern for protecting U.S. assets abroad. In 1979, his disastrous ââ¬Å"Crisis of Confidenceâ⬠speech angered voters by seeming to blame Americaââ¬â¢s problems on the peopleââ¬â¢s disrespect for government and lack of ââ¬Å"spirit.â⬠The main cause of Carterââ¬â¢s political downfall may have been the Iranian Hostage Crisis. On November 4, 1979, Iranian students seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 66 Americans hostage. His failure to negotiate their release, followed by a dismally failed covert rescue mission further eroded public confidence in Carterââ¬â¢s leadership. The hostages were held for 444 days until being released on the day Carter left office on January 20, 1981. In the 1980 election, Carter was denied a second term, suffering a landslide loss to former actor and Republican governor of California Ronald Reagan. On the day after the election, the New York Times wrote, ââ¬Å"On Election Day, Mr. Carter was the issue.â⬠Later Life and Legacy Jimmy Carter accepts the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Getty Images / Stringer After leaving office, Carterââ¬â¢s humanitarian efforts more than restored his reputation, leaving him widely regarded as one of Americaââ¬â¢s greatest former-presidents. Along with his work with Habitat for Humanity, he founded the Carter Center, dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. In addition, he worked to improve health care systems in Africa and Latin America and oversaw 109 elections in 39 fledgling democracies. In 2012, Carter helped build and repair homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and in 2017, he teamed with the four other former presidents to work with One America Appeal in assisting victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma in the Gulf Coast. Moved by his hurricane relief experiences, he wrote several articles describing the goodness he has seen in Americansââ¬â¢ eagerness to help each other during natural disasters. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ââ¬Å"for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.â⬠In his acceptance speech, Carter summarized the mission of his life and hope for the future. ââ¬Å"The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices,â⬠he said. God gives us the capacity for choice. We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace. We can make these changes ââ¬â and we must. Health Issues and Longevity

The Physics Of The Atomic Theory - 964 Words
In chemistry, it has been stated that atoms are the basic building blocks of ordinary matter that contain protons, neutrons, electrons, and can join to form molecules. (Gagnon) Atoms are really tiny and are considered the source of nuclear energy in all kinds of matter. The atomic theory became a very important piece in chemistry because it explained the atomic structure and how it worked. Important scientists that helped contribute to this theory were people like John Dalton and J.J. Thompson which helped establish a foundation to the theory, as well as create experiments that helped provide evidence of their findings. John Dalton was an important scientist that established the atomic theory. His theory was as follows: 1.All matter is made of atoms. Atoms are invisible and indestructible. 2. All atoms of given elements are identical in mass and properties. 3. Compounds are formed by a combination of 2 or more different kinds of atoms. 4. A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of ato ms. 5. Atoms cannot be created or destroyed. (Leon) Dalton brought up this information while using his gas experiments and it helped him determine the properties of atoms. Although Democritus had somewhat already had a theory on matter, Dalton explored and expanded the theory into what it is today. Dalton was inspired and borrowed the term ââ¬Å"atomosâ⬠or ââ¬Å"atomsâ⬠from Democritus to label his particles. The main reason why it is called a microblogs sites are because it is seen that generally peoples share short snippets of texts and pictures as compared to the traditional blogging sites. The reason why Tumbler is chosen is because of the transparency of the structure. Use of the Tumblr is very simple and user friendly, even a kid can use it very easily. IT is easy for the users to create account and search for the like-minded people. It helps in expressing thoughts in a quick and easy manner (Twitter.com, 2018). The topics that have been rejected are similar micro bloggers site the WordPress. Tumblr is better because it provides much more visibility and editability. Unlike the WordPress the tumbler allows the users to post more extensions posts like the videos (For Free). The platforms design is also very much user-friendlier than the other similar sites (Tumblr.com, 2018). Tumblr provides many customizations to the user making it earlier and simpler for the user to be used. This is one of the best topic for blogging because Tumblr being a new technology, has a craze in the people, mostly in the teens who are always in a hurry and wants to do things in an easy manner (Digital Trends, 2018). People loves to learn and understand things in short, which is the fact with Tumblr. Also, people who are interested in learning new things can refer to this blog for more information and find relevant ones. Platform Analysis Tumblr being one of the most unique microblogging site that enables easy sharing of contents. Dissimilar from the other platforms, the Tumblr basically focusses on sharing the multimedia specially designed to share the photos, images, videos and other similar things (Hexagon, 2018). The primary user of the tumblers are the people who likes to read and write small blogs and likes more of the multimedia. Some of the similar platforms like the Tumblr are the WordPress Blogger Squarespace, Wix, Weebly, and Webflow. While the tumbler is a micro blogging site, the webflow is a web designing tool with a hosting platform, Squarespace being service based content management system provides a blogging platform also (Facts, 2018). Wix is also an online web developing site which focuses on the HTML5 for the usage. In the Tumblr it is very easy for showcasing the products in the format of pictures, also it provides free hosting to the users. The Tumblr community, which one can access any time is very much responsive and provides correct information in short time (Renwick, 2018). The Tumblr comprises of the Tumblr dictionary, which is a great option for listing task accordingly. Some of the weakness of the entire system are the Anonymity issue. Anonymity delivers guard for handlers that want to freely speech thoughts without consequences. The Yahoo Acquisition. The age restriction is also one of the major issue in the Tumblr (Livewire, 2018). One of the other major problem is the Domain based hosting system that the Tumblr follows. The negative factors may affect the choice the customers in a negative way for the people in the blog. As the people look for a lag free and advanced blogging sites, the backlogs of the site can affect the number of the people who are reading the blog. Also it can be seen that the website hosting is bit difficult in the case of the Tumblrs , devalues of its policy of the domain hosting and hence it becomes tougher. Audience research Audience research can be explained as the type of the specific research that is done on a specific audience fragment to gather information about some topic. For this research the audience that is selected are the audience are the people who are interested in the modern technologies and want to do something new. Tumblr is one of the best platform for such people. The demographic survey of the Tumblr came out that approx. 10% of the total internet users the Tumblr on a regular basis. Out of this the maximum number are the womens of the colleges. It is also seen that the people with salary more than the $75000 uses the most among the others. This is because of the feature of the Tumblr that is the business blogs. Business blog helps the people to earn money and understand more of a topic. Due to huge amount of density in the network of the tumbler it becomes easier for the people to find the likeminded people and connect (Pew Research Centre: Internet, Science Tech, 2018). A typical ex ample of this is man, who has a certain online business and wants to know more about the technology. A clean and clear website is one he will certainly like to visit to gain knowledge, Inclusion of the proper video and photos helps a lot to gain the attention of the people (Union Metrics, 2018). This kind of people are very good for the blogs because they provide with money and helps in expanding the blogging network. With money and helps in expanding the blogging network. Reflective This is one of the best project that I have done so far because of the fact that I came to know about many new things about the internet and its usage. People gets attracted to things that look good at first. For fang this particular project I had to search a study a opt of things which helped me to grow my knowledge. In order to get maximum number of viewers, there must a good content with proper references, if the content of the blog is good people come again and again for the same. Things that would have been improved in the entire task is about the way to represent the things in a good format. Formatting a particular is necessary, part from the consent and the view (Marketing and Growth Hacking, 2018). Tumbler being one of the best micro blogging site provides enough scope for the new generation for gaming knowledge and learn new things. Getting connected is also a key feature of this blogger site. MY advice to my friends are that in order to learn new things and enhance the know ledge about the concept of the blogging. Tumblr being new to the market has got huge scopes in the future for success as now a days people seek for smaller and quicker to read blogs due to the busy schedule of the people (Livewire, 2018). Although there are some of the backdrops of the system that causes people to not accept the change in the profile , but are very small and negligible and dissent cause any problem to the people who enjoys the concept of the technology. This concluding the topic I can say that it was very easy to work with the platform of the tumbler and it helped me to learn many things which will help me in future. References Digital Trends. Superfreakonomics Paper Essay Sample free essay sample
To be wholly honest. when I foremost signed up for the class entitled ââ¬ËAP Macroeconomics. ââ¬â¢ I truly had no thought what the ââ¬Ëmacroââ¬â¢ in the word meant. Of class I knew the significance of economicsââ¬âitââ¬â¢s everyplace in these seeking times of the economic system. plus. it was a vocab word in in-between school. Now that Iââ¬â¢ve read Super Freakonomics. I have an apprehension of what the prefix in the word really means and I find it interesting. possibly even a hereafter calling option. or major in college. This book made me believe in different ways. ways that I neer imagined to believe of earlier ; in one manner. I may even state it changed my life in opening my head to different mentalities on legion subjects such as harlotry and life insurance. to utilizing place belts and doing certain your physician has washed his custodies before that checkupââ¬âeven the manner money affects human ( or possibly monkeys ) life style. Even the small statistics that made me raise my superciliums in confusion. daze such as it being safer to drive rummy than walk rummy. this book went everyplace. It made me maintain inquiring what all of this had to make with the AP category Iââ¬â¢d be taking following yearââ¬âbut now I see. Before I read this book. my sentiment on many of the issues taken into history were slightly different and though my sentiments may hold remained the same in a manner. my head is now unfastened to the other sentiments or facts of others. This assignment is based on conveying my sentiment of the issues brought up in this book. and I intend on it making so. Like most adult females of this twenty-four hours and age. I do non stand for any kind of debasement or male chauvinist comments. attitudes. gestures of our gender. The first chapter in this novel is entitled. ââ¬ËHow is a Street Prostitute like a Department-Store Santa? ââ¬â¢ and the first clip I read that. I had a feeling this book wasnââ¬â¢t traveling to precisely be what I thought it wasââ¬âanother deadening AP Summer assignment book with a drilling undertaking due on the first dayââ¬âwell. I was decidedly right. it was non deadening. At first. I was confused as of how all of this would bind into macroeconomic. but to my surprise. it did so. Now as I said in the first sentence of this paragraph. it would be easy to presume that I am against harlotry. and youââ¬â¢re right. I am. It wasnââ¬â¢t until I read the last few pages of chapter 1 about a adult female named Allie who happened to be a successful concern adult female who turned to harlotry for some excess money. and even when that was over. she went back to college to go an economic expert that my sentiment may hold shifted somewhat. From this chapter Iââ¬â¢ve learned that even harlotry involves much economic sciences into the procedure of acquiring money and being intelligent to make so would assist. Though my sentiment of harlotry remains the sameââ¬âit is wrongââ¬âI was surprised by the manner adult females such as Allie handled through it. and was happy with the result. Chapter 2 besides made my head. my sentiment wander such as through narratives. facts. and statistics. It was entitled. ââ¬ËWhy Should Suicide Bombers Buy Life Insurance? ââ¬â¢ Think about it: who would believe a terrorist would pass money to purchase life insurance if he was merely to decease merely hebdomads subsequently? Not many. And this is precisely why 1 should buy life insurance to acquire the federal authorities off of his dorsum ; it would confound the authorities into believing thereââ¬â¢s no manner he could be a terrorist! Itââ¬â¢d be a win. win. for the bad cat sing his household would besides be having money after the concern had been done. This chapter practically gives tips on how to be a good terrorist without anyone happening out about you. Terrorism is a chilling thing that seems to be neer stoping in our universe today. and though I wish it would stop. possibly even peace overcome it. itââ¬â¢s inevitable. This chapter does demo a good point though. if one was to kill himself anyhow. might every bit good be able to give his household money afterwards. rectify? The economic expert whom was able to make a system to seek and catch terrorists before they commit to anything. had good purposes. but even with 99 per centum truth. it wasnââ¬â¢t good plenty. That besides astonished meâ⬠¦ 99 per centum? If it were me make up ones minding whether or non to utilize this equipment. Iââ¬â¢d believe this to be a immense achievement and those one per centum of people who were accidently considered terrorists shouldnââ¬â¢t be offendedââ¬âweââ¬â¢re merely seeking to do America saferââ¬âright? In all honestness. Iââ¬â¢d love to see myself an selfless individual. but so once more. I think of the existent ground Iââ¬â¢m doingââ¬âhelping out at an carnal shelter. cleaning up our local nature preserve. volunteering around our community as a wholeââ¬âI love assisting others. but carry throughing all of these things gives me that warm. fuzzy. feeling inside because I chose to make it for the benefit of myself. non others. So though I do enjoy assisting others. is it genuinely to assist them. or my ain self-importance. mentality. scruples? In the 3rd chapter entitled ââ¬ËUnbelievable Narratives about Apathy and Altruism. ââ¬â¢ the first narrative is about a adult female viciously murdered by her flat and no 1 about ; none of the legion informants did anything to assist this adult female. or to halt what was traveling on. This sickens me. If one was to even assist out in this state of affairs. I wouldnââ¬â¢t even see it selfless ; Iââ¬â¢d see it a moral responsibility. Unfortunately. I do non believe in anyone being merely selfless. every bit much as I want to. and itââ¬â¢s sad. Worlds are selfish animate beings. In this chapter. the writers write about an experiment done in a lab to see if selflessness really did be by playing a game with money ( a individual was given a certain sum of money in which they had to divide with person else ) . The mean sum of money given away was 20 per centum of their ain. and although the scientists believe this to be an illustration of selflessness. I have to differ. I believe the people did that since it wasnââ¬â¢t their ain money to pass in the first placeââ¬âthey hadnââ¬â¢t earned the money themselves. they were merely having it. so why non give some off? Besides. it would do themselves experience a small spot better ; acquiring free money. itâ⠬â¢s merely just to portion some. rectify? Their scruples came into drama. ââ¬ËThe Fix is inââ¬âand itââ¬â¢s Cheap and Simpleââ¬â¢ was what the following chapter was entitled. Even the first few sentences in this chapter made me believe otherwise ; Iââ¬â¢m normally stating how much I wished I lived in another decadeââ¬âthe 1960ss and 1970ss to be exact ; it seemed more unworried. more merriment and exciting with better music to exceed it all off. Reading the beginning of this chapter made me recognize. yes. there may hold been better music at that clip. but would it truly be so much better? Crime rate was highly higher with income. instruction. transit. wellness highly lower. Possibly this decennary isnââ¬â¢t every bit bad as I thought it to be? The following portion of this chapter brings in doctorââ¬â¢s who were evidently excessively lazy to assist salvage a life. though they were seeing approximately 100 patients per displacement. The ground I say this is because many doctorââ¬â¢s. largely back so. didnââ¬â¢t wash their cu stodies traveling from patient to patient and more than frequently brought sources with him to each and every following patient he saw. This caused more jobs including the ill-famed puerperal feverââ¬âsolely because doctorââ¬â¢s refused to rinse their custodies. Apparently theyââ¬â¢d be passing more clip over the sink than salvaging livesââ¬âboy. were they incorrectly. Equally shortly as the thought spread to rinse custodies before each patient and some doctorââ¬â¢s began making so. the febrility began to diminish demoing Semmelweis ( the physician who had figured out the job distributing this disease ) was right. A survey even showed that bacteriums on doctorââ¬â¢s custodies are more than the bacteriums in refuse. or gall. Even though the reply to repairing a immense quandary such as a disease spreading was merely to rinsing custodies. some doctorââ¬â¢s refused to make so ; yet another illustration of non being selfless. non paying attending to hygiene. and being lazy from human existences. Just retrieve following clip you have to see a physician. he has washed his custodies. So. ââ¬ËWhat do Al Gore and Mount Pinatubo have in Common? ââ¬â¢ No. this is non another pathetic gag found on a Popsicle stick ; itââ¬â¢s the name of Chapter 5 in Super Freakonomics. The reply. you ask? Theyââ¬â¢ve both attempted in stoping planetary heating ( even though Mount Pinatubo was somewhat more natural and non planned out ) . Until I read these concluding pages of this novel. I ever believed in planetary heating being the most of import issue that should work out and rapidly. I guess I truly hadnââ¬â¢t known that much about it beside the result of animate beings losing their home ground and death. going closer and closer to extinction. ( Iââ¬â¢m a chump for animals. ) I think itââ¬â¢s eldritch how we all know of the planetary issue of warming. but seldom of all time hear of planetary coolingââ¬âI thought that was merely a myth created by Fox News! Although this chapter negotiations about Al Gore. person Iââ¬â¢ve looked up to since I was a child. as a individual who doesnââ¬â¢t truly cognize what heââ¬â¢s speaking about and exaggerates as a fright maneuver to assist the environment. I really still see planetary heating as an utmost importance that needs to be fixed. Thank goodness Iââ¬â¢ve read this book though ; now I know that it isnââ¬â¢t those excess stat mis I drove to take the long manner place. itââ¬â¢s what Iââ¬â¢ve been eating! Bing enlightened with facts such as this ( that meat production is the most utmost manner to add to planetary heating ) . it has made me recognize that eating so much ruddy meat isnââ¬â¢t so necessary. and Iââ¬â¢m going closer and closer to going a vegetarian. Over all. this fresh decidedly sits on the book shelf along with my other favourite books. Iââ¬â¢d recommend it to anyone ; Iââ¬â¢d even consider re-reading it. Now. the epilogue of this fresh truly is what had me believing. though. Those scientists who taught the monkeys how to utilize a money system to have dainties and such ( even harlotry finally ) were genius. It truly captured how the money system may be what causes so much corruptness and offense in our society. After reading the last subdivision of this book. I thought traveling back to olden times where the swap system was the manner to have the demands of life may really be the manner to goââ¬âbut so once more. you shouldnââ¬â¢t kick about the present because the past isnââ¬â¢t truly all that better. right?
